2012-01-27 What land bird has the greatest wingspan - The Andean Condor or the Marabou Stork?
The Andean Condor - Vultur gryphus - is found in the Andes
Mountains, South
America. Condors are vultures and the Andean Condor is mostly
black, but males have a distinctive white "collar" around their necks
and some white markings on their wings as well. The head and neck are a dull
red color, which may change color in response to the bird's emotional state. The
male has a wattle on the neck and a large, dark red comb. The Andean condor is endangered
and has a verified wingspan of 3,2 metres or 10,5 ft.
The Marabou Stork - Leptoptilos
crumeniferus – is found in sub-Saharan Africa.
It is unmistakable due to its size, bare head and neck, black back, and white
underparts. They have huge bills, a pink gular sac, a neck ruff, and black legs
and wings. It has a verified wingspan of 3,2 metres or 10,5 ft.
