The Great
Bustard - Otis tarda - is the heaviest flying bird in Europe with the heaviest verified specimen - 21 kg or
46lbs. The adult male is brown above and white below, with a long grey neck and
head. The breast and lower neck sides are chestnut. In the breeding season, the
male has long white neck bristles.
The Kori
Bustard - Ardeotis kor - is the heaviest flying bird in Africa which weighs up to 20 kg or 44 lbs. Reports
of specimens weighing 23 kg or 51lbs have been reported, but none of these
have been verified. Body size is generally greater in the populations of
southern Africa and body mass can vary based
upon rain conditions.
