According to a report on Birding in the United States, 48 million people watched birds in 2008/9. Birdwatching was more popular in the Southern States and the fivel states with the greatest birding participation rates were found to be Montana , Maine, Vermont, Iowa and Minnesota.

It is thought that there are more than 50 Million birders in the United States today.
