2011-06-20 National Birds - Liberia and Sao Tome and Principe.
Liberia: -
The Common Bulbul - Pycnonotus barbatus - is mostly greyish-brown above and whitish-brown below, with a
distinctive dark head and pointy crest on top of the head. The back of
the head merges into the brown of the back, and the chin is also
blackish. The underparts are grey-brown apart from yellow around the vent. It is about 18 cm in
length, with a long tail. It has a dark brown head and upperparts. Sexes
are similar.
It is found in woodland, coastal bush, forest edges, riverine bush,
montane scrub and in mixed farming habitats. It is also found in exotic
thickets, gardens and parks.
This species eats fruit, nectar and insects.
Sao Tome and Principe: -
The African Grey Parrot - Psittacus erithacus - also known as the Grey Parrot, is found in the primary and secondary rainforests of West and Central Africa. Experts regard it as one of the most intelligent birds.
They feed primarily on palm nuts, seeds, fruits, leafy matter, but have
been observed eating snails.
Their overall gentle nature and their
inclination and ability to mimic speech have made them popular pets.
This has led many to be captured from the wild and sold into the pet
trade. The African Grey Parrot is listed on CITIES appendix II, which restricts trade of wild caught species, because wild populations can not sustain trapping for the pet trade.
