2011-06-04 Golden-winged Warbler, Vermivora chrysoptera needs protection.
The Golden-winged Warbler, Vermivora chrysoptera, breeds in eastern North America and southeastern Canada.
Golden-winged Warbler populations are slowly expanding northwards, but
are generally declining across its range, most likely as a result of
habitat loss and competition / interbreeding with the very closely related
Blue-winged Warbler, Vermivora cyanoptera.
Golden-winged Warblers are migratory, over wintering in southern Central America and the neighboring regions.
This beautiful Warbler may warrant federal protection
as a threatened or endangered species, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service.
