Aves Trip / Tour / Safari / Adventure report on visit to Rondevlei Nature Reserve, Cape Town.

The Aves afternoon trip to Rondevlei started with the sighting of a Peregrine Falcon at Klip Road, Cemetery, Grassy Park. This is the second time an Aves afternoon Tour has seen a Peregrine Falcon here. On entering Rondevlei Nature Reserve we identified Laughing Dove, Cape Bulbul, Red-eyed Dove, Karoo Prinia and Common Waxbill.

The water level in Rondevlei is extremely low at present, so the waterfowl tend to be further from the hides. At the first hide we saw Cape Wagtail, Purple Swamphen, Little Rush Warbler, Common Moorhen, Hadeda Ibis and African Snipe, which presented excellent photograhic opportunities. The first African Snipe for me at Rondevlei Nature Reserve. As we were about to leave the first hide we heard the call of a African Fish Eagle and spotted one high overhead. A second then circled above the hide and we were able to get a number of photographs. This is the first time in two years that I have seen African Fish Eagle in The Rondevlei, Seekoevlei and Strandfontein area. A great sighting.

The second hide produced Glossy Ibis, again excellent photographic opportunities, Yellow-billed Duck, African Spoonbill, Grey Heron, Lesser Swamp-Warbler and Reed Cormorant.

African Shelduck, Cape Shoveler, White-breasted Cormorant, Great Crested Grebe seen from the third hide.

At the forth hide we photographed Malachite Kingfisher, African Darter, Great White Pelican and saw Hartlaub's Gull, Kelp Gull, Three-banded Plover and Caspian Tern.

The walk back to the entrance produced Black Shouldered Kite, Small Grey Mongoose, Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Levailliant's Cisticola, Common Waxbill, European Starling, Cape Robin-Chat, Southern Boubou and Common Fiscal.

A most enjoyable two hours of birding.

Red = Endemic
