been seized at Douala International Airport, Cameroon. The parrots were being
illegally shipped to Bahrain and Mexico for the pet trade. These beautiful birds but
are now being cared for by the Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon.
In January 2007 a two-year ban on exports of
African Grey Parrots from five West
African countries - Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and
Cameroon. Even with the regulations, thousands of wild birds were stuffed in boxes or bags and headed for the international black market.
The trade in bird species is banned in the USA but is still legal in
Europe and elsewhere.
The African Grey Parrot is in decline due to a
growing and highly lucrative harvest for the pet trade from West and
Central Africa.
