India's rarest bird - Jerdon's courser

The elusive Jerdon's Courser - Rhinoptilus bitorquatus - was thought extinct in 1900, but was dramatically rediscovered in 1985 in the forest area of the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. There may be only 25 of these birds left, with most found in the Sri Lankamalleswara wildlife sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh.

The Jerdon's Courser is a nocturnal bird and is an unmistakable compact courser, with two brown breast-bands. It has a yellow base to the black it's bill, a blackish crown and orange-chestnut throat patch. A narrow white crown stripe runs on top of the head. In flight it shows a mostly black tail and a prominent white wingbar.
