Robben Island, has a list of 164 bird species. It is an
Important Bird Area because it provides breeding habitat for several threatened
marine and coastal species.
It was declared a cultural World Heritage
Site in 1999, and an Important Birding Area.
Robben Island is the only site to see Chukar
Partridge - Alectoris chukar – a feral population in South Africa. The Island has the 4th largest
breeding colony of the African Penquin - Spheniscus
demersus.
