Aves Western Cape Birding Day Tours.

Morning Birding Tours: -

·       Constantia Greenbelts Birding and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens Birding.

Constantia Greenbelts are the best places to see Knysna Warbler. Other specials are Cape Batis, Buff-spotted flufftail and African Wood-owl.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, one of the best botanical gardens in the world, is home to a number of Cape endemics ? Cape Spurfowl, Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird.

·       Boulders Penguin Colony Birding and the coastal species of Kommetjie Birding.

Boulders is home to over 1,000 pairs of the endemic African Penguin. Other specials include Brimstone Canary, Cape Cormorant, Cape Sugarbird and Southern Boubou.

Kommetjie offers access endemic Bank and Crowned Cormorants and African Black Oystercatcher.

·       Strandfontein Pans Birding and Rondevlei Nature Reserve Birding.

Strandfontein is the best water-bird locality close to Cape Town with abundant and diverse species. Specials include African Marsh Harrier, Black-necked Grebe, Greater Flamingo, Great White Pelican, Cape Shoveler and Moccoa Dock.

Rondevlei

·       Helderberg Nature Reserve Birding.

Helderberg Nature Reserve on the slopes of the Helderberg has all five Cape endemics and is a good place to see Orange-breasted Sunbird and the Cape Sugarbird.

·       Intaka Island Birding and Rietvlei Birding.

Intaka Island has a good selection of water-bird and is a good place to see Greater painted Snipe, African Snipe and Malachite Kingfisher.

Rietvlei is home to a number of widespread water-bird species and good area for Levaillant?s Cisticola and Common Waxbill.

 

Afternoon Birding Tours: -

·       Rondevlei Nature Reserve Birding.

Rondevlei is a well maintain reserve with Hippopotamus and a wide variety of water-birds. The reserve has two observation towers, a number of bird hides and offers boat trips to the breeding colonies. Specials are African Purple Swamphen, African Spoonbill, Purple Heron, Little Bittern and African Snipe.

·       Strandfontein Pans Birding.

Strandfontein is the best water-bird locality close to Cape Town with abundant and diverse species. Specials include African Marsh Harrier, Black-necked Grebe, Greater Flamingo, Great White Pelican, Cape Shoveler and Moccoa Dock.

·       Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens Birding.

Bird the Fynbos and stream vegetation around the vineyards near Stellenbosch for Fynbos specials. Watch the sunset with panoramic view from Cape point to the Paarl valley, while tasting some of South Africa?s best wines. Bird the area for Barn Owl, Cape Eagle Owl, Spotted Eagle Owl, Fiery-necked Nightjar and Freckled Nightjar.

 

Day Birding Tours: -

·       Cape Point Birding and Boulders Penguin Colony Birding.

Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is one of the most spectacular reserves with striking landscapes, botanical diversity and in contrast a low density bird species. Specials in the Cape Point Reserve include Peregrine Falcon, Plain-backed Pipit, Grassbird, Hottentot Buttonquail and Cape Siskin.

Lunch at the Black Marlin Restaurant.

Boulders penguin colony Simonstown is home to over 1,000 pairs of the endemic African Penguin. Other specials include Brimstone Canary, Cape Cormorant, Cape Sugarbird and Southern Boubou.

·       Helderberg N.R., Stony Point Penguin Colony and Harold Porter Botanical Garden in Betty?s Bay.

Helderberg Nature Reserve on the slopes of the Helderberg has all five Cape endemics and is a good place to see Orange-breasted Sunbird and the Cape Sugarbird.

Stony Point penguin colony is smaller than the Boulders colony and is a good place to see Bank, Cape, Crowned and White-breasted Cormorant?s.

Lunch at Harold Porter Restaurant.

Harold Porter Botanical Gardens offers great Fynbos and forest birding. Specials include Cape Siskin, Black Saw-wing, Yellow Bishop, Brimstone Canary and Victorin?s Scrub-warbler.

·       Paarl Mountain Reserve, Paarl Bird Santuary and Helderberg Nature Reserve.

Paarl Mountain Reserveoffers good Fynbos birding and is a good site for the Protea Seed-eater. Specials include Bar-throated Apalis, Cape Batis, Cape Bulbul, Fiscal Flycatcher and Malachite Sunbird.

Paarl Bird Sanctuary offers excellent birding with specials African Reed-warbler, African Paradise Flycatcher, Southern Pochard, Maccoa Duck, Black Crake, Water Thick-knee, Grey-headed Gull and White-winged Tern.

·       West Coast National Park and Berg River Estuary Birding.

West Coast National Park is best known for the large numbers of migrant waders, but also offers excellent Strandveld birding. Specials include Black Harrier, Cape Penduline-tit, Southern Black Korhaan, White-backed Mousebird, Long-billed Crombec, Bokmakierie and Yellow Canary.

Berg River Estuary offers excellent birding with specials such as Chestnut-banded Plover, Kittlitz?s Plover, Greater and Lesser Flamingo?s, Capped Wheatear, Large-billed Lark and Curlew Sandpiper.
